My research group at the University of North Texas strives to understand material properties to tailor emerging materials for renewable energy production. The main experimental technique in our lab is Terahertz (THz) spectroscopy.
THz radiation is sensitive to free charges, bound excitons, phonons, and even Higgs modes in superconductors (and more). Furthermore, THz radiation is a contact free technique eliminating the need for tedious electrode fabrication; we can even study powder samples. This makes THz the optimal wavelength range to explore emerging materials.
The core technique in my lab is optical pump THz probe (OPTP) carrier lifetime measurements and time resolved THz spectroscopy (TRTS) to understand the complex photo-conductivity and photo-effects. To leverage these techniques my lab will use multiple ultra-fast laser systems. Maintaining these systems will train students in my lab to become experts in laser physics and spectroscopy. Furthermore, my lab synthesizes advanced materials and collaborates with world-class material science groups. This will provide an additional opportunity for students to learn material science. Finally, data processing and modelling will be applied to understand the physics causing measured properties.
Students (and postdocs) in my lab will perform world class research on the intersection of physics, material sciences, and chemistry. They will gain expertise in laser physics, spectroscopy, material synthesize and characterization, and modeling/simulations. This will prepare them for future research as well as for a wide range of positions in the private sector.
If you are interested in joining a growing group of motivated and outstanding scientist please do not hesitate to contact me email. We currently have openings in all sub-disciplines listed above and for all career levels. I am particularly interested in post-doctorial research in materials sciences, and graduate students in all sub fields. We furthermore offer bachelor and master projects.
If you are interested in THz spectroscopy please also take a look at the subtabs (software), (THz-TDS Tutorial), and (OPTP/TRTS-Tutorial). The Current Student Projects subtab provides a more detailed explanation of the ongoing and planned research in my group.
